I. Product Overview:
BENTONE® 34 is an organic bentonite additive suitable for low-to-medium polarity organic solvent coating systems.
II. Product Characteristics:
Composition: Modified bentonite
Appearance: Off-white to slightly grayish pink/yellow/white or light cream powder
Density: 1.7 g/cm³
Moisture Content: ≤3.0%
III. Application Areas:
Binders, anti-corrosion coatings, automotive refinish paints, asphalt coatings, polishing agents, coil coatings, appliance coatings, greases, thick-film coatings, industrial coatings, interior/exterior wall paints, fillers, release agents, paint strippers, plastic sols, primers, topcoat fillers, printing inks, sound absorbers, wood finishes, paraffin wax.
IV. Key Properties:

2. Ideal thixotropic properties.

4. Improves flow and leveling.
5. Effectively reduces sagging in vertical applications and enhances penetration on porous substrates.
6. Prevents separation in thixotropic systems.
V. Application Methods:
When incorporating BENTONE® 34 into organic coating systems, high-shear dispersion equipment must be used for mixing and dispersing. Add a chemical activator to ensure complete activation and achieve optimal performance.
Method 1: Directly add to the resin/solvent mixture. High-speed disperse for 10 minutes. Add the chemical activator and high-speed disperse for another 10 minutes. Then add pigments and fillers and high-speed disperse for 15 minutes or longer.
Method 2: Add as a pregel (5-10% solids content).
First inject solvent into the mixing vessel. Add BENTONE® 34 and mix at high speed. Finally, add the chemical activator to optimize gelation.
During addition, the pregel is directly added to the resin/solvent mixture for high-speed dispersion. Pigments and fillers are then added and dispersed at high speed.
